“Gambarini is a true successor to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae.” —Kevin Lowenthal, Boston Globe
When Roberta Gambarini sings, expressing her passion for the Great American Songbook, she does so with no trace of an accent. But when she talks to her audience and her warm personality shines through, she is so Italian. That’s because she was born and raised in Torino, Italy to a family in love with American jazz. She came to the US in 1998 with a scholarship to The New England Conservatory in Boston. Two weeks later, she stunned many in the jazz world by winning third place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Her first release “Easy to Love” was nominated for a grammy in the Best Vocal Jazz Category in 2007. That same year, Downbeat Magazine called her talent “formidable” and she was named the 2007 Female Jazz Singer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA). In 2008, she was named “Rising Star Female Vocalist of the Year” in DownBeat Magazine’s Critic’s Poll. That same year, Roberta made her major label debut with the legendary pianist Hank Jones on “You Are There” (Groovin’ High/Emarcy). She has also performed with Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, James Moody, Christian McBride and Toots Thielemans to name a few.
