CU Denver's new head of piano, Peter John Stoltzman, leads a band of young lions that includes Boulder's bass virtuoso Garrett Sayers (The Motif), Austin drummer Wayne Salzmann (Eric Johnson), and saxophonist Justin Vasquez. Stoltzman is releasing his second trio CD, which includes "new standards," such as Stoltzman's arrangement of Time After Time, classic standards like Bye Bye Blackbird, and original compositions.
Stoltzman has cut his teeth as a sideman with jazz luminaries and young lions, performing and recording with Eddie Gomez, Steve Gadd, Ron Westray, Yosvanny Terry, Marcus Gilmore, and many others. A uniquely diverse performer, Peter has recorded crossover albums for BMG with his father, Grammy-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, played the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and toured with funk/rock, drum-n-bass/fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groups. Peter has performed an avant-garde concerto with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and made hip-hop tracks for Warner Bros. artists.
Now settled in Denver with wife and two sons, Stoltzman is completing a doctoral degree in Music and Human Learning, performing, composing and arranging, working as the faculty director of the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and building the UCD piano program.
"…a marvelous pianist…" (Timothy Gilligan, New York Concert Review)
"…exhilarating and buoyant…" (The Bermuda Royal Gazette)
"…a monster jazz piano player…" (the late Jack Elliot, director of the Mancini Institute)
