Trombonist Mark Patterson brings his unique Group Stories Quintet back to Dazzle. The Quintet plays music written especially for the group, including a suite, The Man With the Blue Guitar, commissioned by the Lamont School of Music and titled after the (eponymous) Wallace Stevens poem. This group treads balances gracefully, combining group interplay, the intimacy of improvisation, and a deep sense of swing to open a wide eye in the search for beauty. This is a group of storytellers that “dwells in possibility.”
The musical connections among the Quintet players in run deep. Dale was an early teacher of Mark’s, both in many nights on the bandstand (with the great tenor saxophonist Spike Robisnon, who also featured Mark’s father, Dick Patterson, on bass), and in Dale’s studio during certain daylight hours. Mark, Paul, and Ron have played together since they were teenagers, notably in a small group at the University of Denver which had occasion to record at the infamous Caribou Ranch. Kent was featured in another of Mark’s quartets at Dazzle, and has a long and creative association with Ron. Dale and Ron had an outstanding trio association (with bassist Paul Warburton). The musical associations of the Quintet's players are equally deep, running the gamut from Dizzy Gillespie to Bill Frisell.
